I went into Holywater thinking about oysters. Then our waiter recommended the gumbo, and the plan changed. Add a salad to the order, and I had my own French Quarter version of soup and salad.
The Caesar salad was savory and full of flavor, with plenty of dressing and freshly shaved cheese. The gumbo was incredible, and the portion was generous. Together, they made for my own French Quarter version of soup and salad, and I left completely satisfied.
There was okra in the gumbo, but what I loved was that it brought the flavor without the texture, which was perfect for me.
The room is part of the experience, too. Just off Royal Street at 622 Conti, Holywater has blue walls, fishing floats, framed pictures, stripes and a zigzag floor. The white doors open toward the street, with small tables and a wooden bar inviting you to settle in and take it all in.
As for those oysters? I saw a plate go by, and they looked amazing. The drinks looked so good, too. I’ll be back to try both.
