Where to Buy Groceries in the French Quarter

A shaded French Quarter shopping street with gallery signs and colorful facades.

A neighborhood shopping street in the French Quarter. The grocery stops are described below.

Breakfast supplies, cold drinks, a forgotten paper towel roll: a grocery stop belongs in a French Quarter itinerary, even when every dinner is booked.

For a general grocery run, start with Rouses on Royal or Matassa's on Dauphine. Quarter Grocery & Deli is especially useful for a short list of basics. Verti Marte and Central Grocery have different strengths, so choose them with a meal or a particular pantry purchase in mind. All five addresses are in the Quarter.

Rouses Market: the first stop for a cooking list

701 Royal Street · (504) 523-1353

The Royal Street Rouses is the clearest starting point when your list includes ingredients for an actual meal. Its official store page lists produce, a butcher shop, a seafood market, and wine, beer, and spirits.

Shop with your kitchen in mind: check whether your room has a real refrigerator and cooking equipment before buying perishables or ingredients that need preparation. For a very specific product, call the store rather than assuming every Rouses location carries the same stock.

Make sure your map points to 701 Royal. The Rouses on Baronne is a different store outside the Quarter. Royal Street store information.

Matassa's Market: the Dauphine Street neighborhood stop

1001 Dauphine Street · (504) 412-8700

At Dauphine and St. Philip, Matassa's has a grocery history reaching back to 1924. The Historic New Orleans Collection documents its Sicilian roots and continuing place in the neighborhood. It's a useful grocery-and-deli address if you're staying in this part of the Quarter.

Keep the visit practical: take your essentials list and ask what is available that day. Call ahead if you're counting on a particular fresh item, deli meal, or delivery. Published listings differ on hours, so this guide doesn't promise a closing time. Location and contact information.

Quarter Grocery & Deli: the short list, sorted

836 Burgundy Street · (504) 529-2702

This is a particularly useful address for the things you discover you need after checking in. The store's own inventory description includes eggs, milk, juice, meats and cheeses by the pound, paper goods, pet supplies, bagged ice, and bottled water by the case.

There is also a deli serving po'boys, hot plates, and salads. That makes it convenient to combine a few household purchases with something ready to eat. Its online ordering link is for prepared deli food; confirm grocery availability and any delivery arrangements directly rather than treating the deli menu as a full grocery catalog. Verti Marte: when the immediate problem is dinner

1201 Royal Street · (504) 525-4767

Verti Marte is most useful here as a prepared-food stop. Its published menu includes breakfast, sandwiches, sides, and the All That Jazz sandwich, which brings ham, turkey, shrimp, cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, and the house sauce together on French bread.

Think of it when you want a meal to bring back, rather than planning an entire cooking shop around it. The business advertises round-the-clock service but specifically advises calling late at night because cleaning can interrupt service. That small phone call can save a wasted walk. Menu and contact information.

Central Grocery: a sandwich and something for the pantry

923 Decatur Street · (504) 523-1620

Central Grocery is the specialty stop for muffulettas and Italian pantry shopping. Its own description lists imported pasta and olive oil, and its olive salad is an obvious choice if you want to bring a little of lunch home.

Use it for a focused food purchase: a sandwich now, perhaps a jar or two for later. For a broader household list, start with the groceries above. Central Grocery.

Before you fill the basket

Buy what you can comfortably carry, especially if you're adding ice or drinks. Confirm refrigerator space before stocking up, and ask your hotel about receiving groceries before arranging a delivery. If you need a particular dietary product, brand, or household item, call first; a store category isn't a live inventory guarantee.

Details checked October 19, 2026. Stock, deli service, hours, and delivery arrangements can change.
